Taste of Lawrence 2019

Taste of Lawrence is a three-day food and cultural festival that takes place in the Wexford Heights BIA. As Scarborough’s largest street festival it boasts the most enticing flavours from every cultural community in the GTA. Locals and tourists alike come to the festival to experience the Taste firsthand as they celebrate their cultures and learn about the rich heritage of others.

The festival was founded 17 years ago by Councillor Michael Thompson and a group of community members who had a vision for attracting visitors to the vibrant community on Lawrence Ave that is now known as the Wexford Heights BIA. The first event was held in a local parking lot and attracted just over one thousand people. However, with diligence and vision from the councillor and the BIA, the festival population has grown to accept more than 200,000 people onto Lawrence Ave.

From food lovers to gastronomes to downright gluttons, Dishcrawl brings people from all walks of life together for an evening of delicious food and delightful company. The groups range from 25 to 40 people who are looking to be socially engaged while helping local restaurants gain exposure. Dishcrawl takes foodies to four different restaurants over the course of one evening, in a “pubcrawl” fashion  but more appetizing!

Dishcrawl returns to Scarborough’s Wexford neighborhood on Tuesday, May 7th, 2013 to explore more of this area’s hidden gems! There really is more to Toronto than the downtown core! Reservations are $60 per person and can be purchased at dishcrawl.com/scarborough.

“A Dishcrawl provides more than just a full stomach,” says Scarborough Dishcrawl Ambassador Jennifer Thompson. “It gives you the opportunity to explore a new neighbourhood in your city and seize a culinary adventure that supports local restaurants and the chefs behind them.”

Participating restaurants are kept secret until two days before the event, although by following Dishcrawl on Twitter and Facebook you may catch a few hints!

From Dishcrawl.com:

The Grand Debut of Dishcrawl into Scarborough’s Wexford Heights neighbourhood was a smashing success!

The area stretches from Victoria Park Ave. to Birchmount Rd. and includes a wide variety of restaurants, bakeries and local pubs. The neighbourhood is home to over 50 restaurants, from small Shawarma take-outs to local sports pubs to Oyster bars. On Wednesday, March 27th, 30 Dishcrawlers had the opportunity to join us on a tour of four of them! We were given the chance to sample delicious Vietnamese and Korean cuisine along with traditional pub food and funnel cake!

Here’s a recap of our night:

Stop #1: Pho Metro! This Vietnamese restaurant was a great starting point for our very first Scarborough Dishcrawl. With large framed mirrors lining the walls and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the space looks bigger than it is! The Owner, Ben Le runs this restaurant with his sister Thu and know many of the customers by name.

Rare Beef Pho, Pork Spring Roll, Fresh Shrimp Salad Roll

Ben served Rare Beef Pho, with Beef Broth, Basil, Bean Sprouts and Fresh Lime. The Pork Spring Roll was deep fried and served with fish sauce and the Fresh Shrimp Salad Roll was a rice paper wrap filled with vermicelli and shrimp.

Stop #2: Makkal Chon. Kyung Rye Park came from Korea and is living her dream! Paul, Kyung’s son-in-law, let us know that it had always been her dream to bring people together over great food - similar to Dishcrawl’s philosphy! Makkal Chon is located in an unassuming strip plaza, but well worth the adventure. The decor was quaint and seats about 36-40. They surprised us with custom menus on all of the tables highlighting the Dishcrawl Menu as well as the drink specials for our event!

Bulgogi, Seafood Pancake, Spicy Chicken Vegetable Wrap

We were served Bulgogi - a traditional Korean soy marinated beef dish, along with sides of marinated eggplant, spicy kimchi and sweet potato glass noodles with vegetables. The Seafood Pancake was made with spring onion, shrimps, squid and scallops. Makkalchon’s most popular dish, the Spicy Chicken Vegetable Roll was a leaf of lettuce filled with rice, bean paste and spicy chicken - so delicious!

Stop #3: The Loaded Dog Pub. After having some awesome authentic Vietnamese and Korean dishes, our Dishcrawlers were ready to get back to the basics! Karen, the manager at The Loaded Dog is really involved in community events and made sure to let us know they are “more than just a sports bar”! They love hosting local bands, sports teams and arm wrestling tournaments! On the night of our Dishcrawl an open mic night was happening with some lovely local talent entertaining the regular patrons. With 23 TV’s, The Loaded Dog is a great spot to catch any of your favourite sports games. Make sure to check out Karaoke night on Sundays!

“72 Homerun” Slider, Famous Wings 3 Ways, Fresh Cut Fries

We were treated to their most popular burger, the “72 Homerun” Slider that tasted just like a Big Mac - but 10 x better! The slider came with a side of their delicious Fresh Cut Fries that were perfectly crisp with just the right amount of salt. My favourite were the Famous Wings - Medium, Roasted Red Pepper and Cajun!

Stop #4: Big Moe’s! Last, but certainly not least, our Dishcrawlers embarked upon the last restaurant and course of the evening - dessert! Big Moe’s is a burger, fries and funnel cake restaurant with 2 locations open in Scarborough. Yassir, the owner of this location had always dreamed of opening a funnel cake shop. He decided it would be easier to sell funnel cakes if they sold burgers and fries as well! Their signature burger is the Juicy Lucy - cheese stuffed inside a 5 oz. burger patty! If you get the chance to try Big Moe’s, make sure to ask them for the “Holy Moly”. It’s a secret menu item that isn’t listed on their regular menu! We came for the deep fried, calorie busting, carnival food staple - funnel cake!

Funnel Cake with Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream, Strawberry Sauce and Icing Sugar

The sweet aroma of deep fried funnel cake is something that brings us back to our childhood. These 6 inch beauties were topped with a healthy serving of Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream from St. Clair Ice Cream, warm strawberry sauce and sprinkled icing sugar. Can you say dessert heaven?!

I hope our Dishcrawlers had as much fun as I did exploring the hidden gems of Wexford Heights on Lawrence Ave. E and we can't wait to return! Everybody who attended was amazingly friendly and open to the concept, as well as the fabulous restaurant owners who were so happy to host us! There are plenty of restaurants yet to be explored and we will uncover them - one Dishcrawl at a time! :)
